Một người cha nghèo ở miền Trung có con trai chào đời đúng đêm trùng huyết nguyệt – ngày hiếm hoi giao thoa giữa âm lịch và tiết khí, cứ 30 năm mới có 1 lần. Đứa bé mang số mệnh đặc biệt: vừa là mầm sống, vừa là mồi tế cho một nghi lễ luyện ngải cổ xưa.
Ngay lúc lọt lòng, đứa trẻ bị một nhóm người bí ẩn bắt trộm, đem lên vùng núi nơi rừng sâu che giấu những bản làng sống bằng bùa ngải. Trong tuyệt vọng, người cha băng rừng vượt suối, lần theo dấu vết, để rồi chứng kiến sự thật rùng rợn:
